Making the Most of Work in the New Year

Hey Friends,

When you read the Bible, you'll meet a lot of people God used who didn't have church based ministries.

Nehemiah was a city planner and Esther was a powerful woman in a political world. God used them both.

In Genesis, God is a gardener. In the New Testament, the Son of God trained as a carpenter. Jesus called himself the Good Shepherd.

In our Faith and Work Sunday Bible class we share a lot about how our workday connects to our identity as Christians. This goes for whatever our workday looks like--whether we are engaged in paid or unpaid work and if we are in a season of searching for work. Sometimes we don't see the connection. We see what we do for most of the day as a means to an end. It's something we get through so we can get what we want (relax time and eventually retirement).

In the beginning, God worked. The Bible begins with ideas about work. God created something new. God ordered the different elements to form a cohesive whole. God set boundaries to preserve distinctions and each created element's special qualities.

God created a day of rest. How do we connect work to worship? Jesus knew what it was like to get up and go to work everyday. Jesus lived his life completely devoted to his Heavenly Father. Something to think about.
